EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY: A SHORT STORY.

So you’ve managed to get all your nearest and dearest together in one place, bravo!

You’ve dressed up in an outfit you’ve had planned for weeks, hell-bent on taking your place as most-visibly-successful of all the first cousins, and you’re jittery with the excitement of greeting each guest as they come through the door. These moments come and go like the wind as the next grinning person leaps into your arms. Drink in hand, you dive merrily into catching up with your loved ones.

Two hours in, you worry that you’ve not found a chance to stop for photos – but wait, what’s this? Old Aunt Barb’s calling you all into line, interrupting your chat with a nephew that you haven’t seen in 3 months. Her iPad is raised, shaking with all the force of a richter 7 earthquake.

You force a smile, hoping the lighting is decent, and think to yourself, ‘Good, at least we’ve got some memories of us all together, looking our best.’

After 20 of the same photo, you awkwardly try to rekindle your previous conversation, but your nephew has run off to steal chunks of the cake from under the buffet table.

The next day, Aunt Barb sends her images through. Your bubble bursts. The photos are grainier than the dustbowl, and somehow, she’s simultaneously missed off your feet and your forehead. Probably won’t be putting that on the mantelpiece. That’s sad.

But it doesn’t have to be this way!
